Signing Ceremony on Collaboration Agreement of Development and Operations Perlis Inland Port

Date: Tuesday, 22 February 2022
Venue: Perlis State Assembly Complex

THE first phase of Perlis Inland Port (PIP) is expected to be completed by the end of next year and operational in early 2024, said Perlis Menteri Besar Azlan Man.

He said the project would be able to boost the state’s economic development to benefit all stakeholders, including the people of Perlis.

“It (project) would be able to create about 3,000 job opportunities with the presence of factories and the port, and by those who showed an interest to invest in Perlis.”

“I am putting a very conservative figure of 3,000 at this time but according to the developer (Mutiara Perlis Sdn. Bhd), it expects as many as 5,000 job opportunities to be created.

“In the long run it is expected that 12,000 job opportunities will be created by 2030, he told reporters at the Perlis Inland Port (PIP) Development and Operation Cooperation agreement signing ceremony between Mutiara Perlis (MPSB) and Keretapi Tanah Melayu Berhad (KTMB) here today.

He said this will create a wide range of opportunities for the people of the state in terms of jobs and other opportunities resulting from the economic spillover.

“If economic spillover is effective, it will result in thousands of job opportunities in the forestry, retail, housing and construction sectors taking place in Padang Besar,” he said.

Azlan said the development of PIP would support the growth of the Chuping Valley Industrial Area (CVIA) thus opening a new chapter in the large-scale industrial sector in an area of about 202 hectares to CVIA which has two development components.

“The development of the PIP operating area is implemented by MPSB with an estimated investment of RM1.8 billion while the implementation of external infrastructure facilities including bonded roads, flyover and railway spur line would be implemented by Northern Corridor Implementation Authority (NCIA) with an allocation of RM318 million,” he added.

Meanwhile, KTMB chairman Musa Sheikh Fadzir said the signing of this cooperation was one of KTMB’s strategic measures for the continuation of its logistics business in the north of the peninsula as well as to drive business expansion through the operation of land ports.

“This effort can ensure that KTMB remains competitive in the logistics business by offering comprehensive logistics solutions services to customers,” he said.

He added that PIP would be a major logistics hub supporting the integrated development of the Chuping Valley as well as strengthening the competitiveness of cross-border trade. Cooperation between KTMB and MPSB can directly boost economic and trade activities in Perlis. – Bernama, February 22, 2022.
